GLSEN Arizona Statement on Washington Elementary School District Board Members Under Fire

March 8, 2023

Phoenix, Arizona

At a February 2023 meeting of the Washington Elementary School District board, a unanimous vote to end a voluntary contract with Arizona Christian University over a violation of the School District’s nondiscrimination policy resulted in individual board members coming under attack.

“School board members play a critical role in defining and enforcing policies that help to create safer, more affirming school environments for Arizona students,” said GLSEN Arizona Co-chair Andi Young.

GLSEN Arizona stands in solidarity with school districts that demonstrate unwavering support for inclusion, reaffirming the power of belonging in schools, and celebrating Arizona’s diverse population. GLSEN Arizona stands against personal attacks that endanger the individuals who have been elected to serve our school communities, regardless of their religion and other world views.
