Statement on SB 1138 & SB 1165 being signed into law
Today, on the eve of Transgender Day of Awareness, Governor Doug Ducey signed two bills that will cause immediate and direct harm to transgender youth and their families all across Arizona. SB 1138 bans all gender-affirming surgery for patients under the age of 18, and SB 1165 bans trans girls from participating in girls’ sports.
While they should be making it clear that trans youth and their families are welcomed, valued, and protected in Arizona, Governor Ducey and his administration are using the lives of children as pawns to curry political favor with the extreme right. These discriminatory laws have no place in Arizona or anywhere else. No one's life and freedom should depend solely on the political whims of the state legislature.
GLSEN Phoenix stands with the transgender community, and we will continue to work with our partner organizations and community members to fight these and other hateful and discriminatory bills.
To the transgender community - we are here for you and we encourage you to reach out to those who you know can support you at this time. To our allies - we urge you to connect, offer support and stand in solidarity with the transgender community and their families.
