Your Inclusive Policy Postcard 2.3.2024

Greetings GLSENeers!

It is no surprise that the Arizona legislature is yet again pushing anti-trans bills during this session. We continue to work with our LGBTQIA2S+ advocacy and other civil rights partner organizations to track and fight these bills, knowing that the majority of them will likely be vetoed by Governor Hobbs.

However, SCR 1013 - the pronoun and bathroom resolution - has made it onto the Education Committee Agenda this Wednesday, February 7th and WE NEED YOUR HELP to register your concern and opposition in the RTS and call your legislators asking them NOT to support it.

Read on to learn more about SCR1013 and other bills needing your action.

LEGISLATIVE SESSION UPDATE

URGENT UPDATE: SCR 1013, SB 1166, and SB 1182 have all been placed on the Senate Education Committee agenda and will be heard this Wednesday, February 7th.

SCR 1013: Pronouns use and Bathroom

SCR 1013 is a dangerous resolution that would establish rules related to pronoun use in schools and ban trans Arizonans from using school bathrooms, locker rooms, and shared facilities consistent with their gender identity.

SCR 1013 is a Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) and differs from a House Bill (HB) or a Senate Bill (SB). If passed during the senate committee hearing it will bypass the Governor's desk and go straight to the ballot i.e. Governor Hobbs will not have the opportunity to veto it.

SB1166: The “Pronoun” Bill

SB 1166 would make it illegal for teachers and other school employees to respect the pronouns of a trans or non-binary student without written parental permission. Additionally, for students who do have parental consent, it prevents schools from requiring employees to use their correct pronouns.

SB 1182: Bathroom Bill

SB 1182 is a ruthless bill that goes beyond banning trans students and teachers from using bathrooms that match their gender identity and would require proof of sex from students and teachers, including an attestation from a medical doctor stating that the individual's chromosomes match their asserted sex. This bill also allows any individual to sue any school if they share a restroom or similar school facility with a trans person.
