Your GLSEN Arizona Inclusive Policy Postcard 4.27.2024

Greetings GLSENeer,

We have another veto! With the Wednesdays-Only Legislature, they are doing the bare minimum to address issues impacting Arizonans. This past Tuesday, Governor Hobbs vetoed SB 1182, the anti-trans shower and locker room ban. Again, we’re grateful for her veto of this harmful legislation. You can thank her for being a champion by calling Governor Hobbs at 602-542-4331 and leave her a thankful message!

In this week’s Policy Postcard we discuss Title IX, invite you to join us for YOUTH DAY at the capitol and share a round up of local and national news.

LEGISLATIVE SESSION

TITLE IX HAS BE UPDATED TO EXPLICITLY OUTLINE INCLUSION OF TRANSGENDER STUDENTS

The U.S. Department of Education published a final rule that updates Title IX regulations to clarify legal protections for LGBTQIA2S+ students, survivors of sexual assault, and pregnant and parenting students. These Title IX updates strengthen the legal rights of LGBTQIA2S+ students to challenge discriminatory practices and encourage school districts to adopt more inclusive policies to ensure compliance with federal law.

The recent clarification of Title IX specifically protects LGBTQIA2S+ youth by enumerating inclusion in sex segregated spaces, like locker rooms, bathrooms, and sex education. The updates to Title IX make clear that sex-based discrimination - including discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sex characteristics - is a violation of federal law.

HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?

Check out more about Title IX’s glow up! Get your friends to call Governor Hobbs today (602) 542-4331 and thank her for vetoing SB 1182 and get them to THANK her, too!

WHAT’S NEXT?

Given the narrow one-vote anti-LGBTQ+ majority, many of the bills we have highlighted are expected to pass once brought for a vote and sent to Governor Hobbs. Stay tuned and watch for our veto ask of her in the coming weeks!

LOCAL EVENTS

With so many legislators introducing bills that target 2SLGBTQ+ youth, it is important that youth show up so legislators can see and hear from those they target.

Youth Day is an opportunity for us to build community, political power, and community engagement as we continue to advocate for inclusion, safety, and our ability to thrive.
